Signs You Might Have Sun Damage
Persistent brown spots or patches
- Also called sunspots or age spots, these are flat, darkened areas that appear on sun-exposed skin (face, hands, chest).
- Caused by overproduction of melanin due to UV exposure.
- Unlike freckles, they don’t fade easily and tend to increase with age or repeated sun exposure.
Fine lines appearing earlier than expected
- UV rays break down collagen and elastin, which are essential for firm, youthful skin.
- This leads to early formation of wrinkles, especially around the eyes, mouth, and forehead.
- Often more noticeable in people with fair skin or a history of tanning.
Skin that feels rough or dry despite moisturizing
- Sun exposure damages the skin barrier, causing dehydration and cell turnover slowdown.
- This results in a rough texture, flakiness, and a lack of smoothness—even with regular skincare.
Visible veins or redness
- UV rays can dilate and damage capillaries near the skin’s surface, especially on the cheeks and nose.
- This can cause persistent redness, blotchiness, or spider veins (telangiectasia).
A dull or uneven complexion
- Long-term UV damage can cause uneven pigmentation, poor light reflection, and buildup of dead skin cells.
- Skin looks tired, patchy, or sallow, lacking that healthy, radiant glow.
